We are pleased to announce that Dr Emma Preston, GP and Trainer at Streatham Place Surgery, who is also the Lead GP for the Health Inclusion Team Refugee Clinic in Brixton, has been awarded the BMJ Primary Care Team of the Year Award 2017 for her work with the Inclusion Team.

The Health Inclusion Team Refugee Clinic provides Primary Care to destitute asylum seekers and refugees who have previously been unable to access a GP.

This award recognises primary care teams who have had a substantial effect on the health and wellbeing of the wider community through a specific project.

The Health Inclusion Clinic in Brixton, south London, was set up to provide a first port of call for such people, offering 30 minute appointments with comprehensive health screening and an interpreter. “We can tease out problems that wouldn’t get a proper hearing in a 10 minute appointment,” says Shazia Munir, a GP attached to Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital in London. “The screening can pick up conditions such as latent tuberculosis, hepatitis, anaemia, and diabetes. We then help them get registered with a GP near where they live and provide a summary of their health for that GP.”
